Applications are OPEN.
♢ We accept applications for: fandom (OU), original (OC), alternate universe (AU), and fandom original characters. ♢ Please check the taken and reserve pages to make sure the character you wish to apply for is available. ♢ Up to three versions of a single character may be in the game at once. ° NPCs do take up one of these character slots. They count as AUs. ♢ We allow only one OU version of a character, out of a total of three versions. (That means we can have a combination of either one OU and two AUs, or just three AUs before we stop accepting applications for that character.) ° Alternate universe characters are marked by silver borders on the taken page. ♢ If you are given a revision, you have two weeks to fill it out before we issue an automatic decline. ♢ In the case of a decline, you must wait two weeks before reapplying. ♢ We don't do app challenges. ♢ Headcanon is allowed. ♢ Don't worry about apps getting long. If it takes a lot of words to get across what you're trying to say, then go ahead and use them. ♢ Our goal is to have apps processed within a week of their posting. ♢ Existing players, please make sure you can manage activity with your current characters before applying for more. ♢ Applications are screened. Upon acceptance, you may ask us to unscreen them if you wish. ° Remember: Dreamwidth allows you to reply to your own screened comments!
If you're unsure of who to apply, we suggest the potential app discussion page. Filling out the small form might give you a better idea of who would work better for you and the setting!

Player Name: What would you like to be called? Username: username Current/former characters: Are you already in the game? Were you here before?
Sleeper Character: The character's name goes here, obviously. Username: username Canon: What series is your character from? If an original character, feel free to come up with a fake canon name to be listed on the taken page, while also listing "original". Mark AUs here. Canon point: Where in their story do they come from? Age: Tell us how old they are. If your character's age would be altered upon acceptance into the game, make sure to note that you are changing it here, and what their new age will be. Appearance: Height, build, hair and eye colors, demeanor, even a general fashion sense if you want. Tell us what we would see if we took a glance at your character. Personality: The meat of the application! This should be around four solid paragraphs describing who your character is, both inside and out. We want to make sure you understand the character and will play them accurately to the setting.
If you'd like, you can also include a paragraph on how you see them reacting to the game environment. History: Your character's life. You may link to a wiki here, but we would love to hear your own take on it! This is nearly as important as personality, as we will be using both sections to compare to the City history and make sure it's appropriate. Powers/skills: Be sure to explain how they'll be changed or powered down in the case of non-humans turning human or those who are overpowered.
Characters who are canonically powerless may pitch to gain a power here. All new powers need to enhance an aspect the character already has, whether it relates to their personality or lifestyle, and you will have to explain how you believe it fits with this requirement.
Skills gives us a better idea of what this character is good at in mundane terms, so that we can help with a City position if you're coming up blank.
City Name: This shouldn't allude to their canon name. Position: Profession or other pigeonholing as necessary. Basically, "What laws do they abide by?" for us mods to consider. This will tell us what job the character will be assigned in the Cave, as well. History: Two paragraphs minimum, but this section doesn't need to be very long. You can contact the mods to work with us on this. Absolutely needs to relate to the character in some way or another. Ironic placement, while fun, would not work for the setting. Any powers they may have in the Cave will not be present in this history.
Remember that you need permission if you plan to include other PCs in this history. Proof: This is what will be waiting for a character in their living quarters when they first wake up in the Cave. It should be a photo, a voice clip, a video, etc., anything that would feature the Sleeper in a way that could be recognized. An item that would make a very solid case for your character living in the Diamond City before the Disaster.
Playing First-person sample: (Should be at least 5 or 6 sentences. Links allowed: 15 comments minimum. If AU, samples must be of the same AU.) Third-person sample: (At least 300 words. Links allowed. If AU, samples must be of the same AU.) Did you read the rules? |
Hope Estheim || FFXIII/XIII-2 || done
Name: Garrett Ross
Position: Student in graduate school (master of science, majoring in engineering).
History:
Marry two young business people together, both with high-paying but time-consuming jobs, add in an only child, and subtract some quality family time-- that's the kind of family Garrett was born into. Sure, he was rich, but when he was home, his parents weren't, and when his parents were, he was off somewhere. When he got good grades or an award in an academic competition, all he got was a "that's very nice".
His parents weren't horrible people, thank god, but they just weren't around enough to give their son the attention he needed and wanted while growing up, making it seem like they were people who shared a house but not much else. You can imagine this is why his subconscious dumped a buttload of these family issues into his dream world, giving him a loving mother and a decent relationship with his father instead of those two people.
At least he wasn't too alone as a child, considering he had friends. Yes, he was quiet and shy, but he wasn't a jerk, and being nice gets friends. Not to say that he passed school with relative ease though, because we all know what happens to intelligent kids, especially intelligent kids who skipped grades the way someone bounded up a flight of stairs-- there's the bully and there's the victim, and Garrett was the victim of a whole lot of bullying during his time in school, some even a little dangerous, because you know how crazy kids can get when hating on someone. It's a good thing Garrett had loyal friends, otherwise he wouldn't be a stable enough person.
With some encouragement and help from his circle, Garrett moved out his parents' house after high school graduation and caused a row because apparently they had plans for him. They wanted some business course for him, but he wanted to pursue science because he just loved seeing how things worked. Because of the fight (in which his only contribution was to tell them that he's always done well without them), he was alone and put himself through school. That meant not only shacking up with a friend who had a spare bedroom, but also part-time work and college at the same time, which was so much harder at first because of the figurative silver spoon he had while growing up. Everything was there and he just needed to grab it-- but not out in the real world. He needed skills to survive.
Supporting himself taught Garrett several things-- work efficiently, use money wisely, keep friends close, be smart but don't be a douche. It's a good thing he had the foresight of applying for a full scholarship, because he'd never have managed otherwise, especially since he was studying science in the freaking Diamond City.
Starting college early and immediately after high school, you can imagine that he finished early as well. He took some years off of studying because it seemed like that was all he'd been doing since he was a child, and used that break to work, travel (and even gotten himself into some trouble a few times) and gain some hands-on experience before getting to work on that shiny master's degree. What does he have to gain from being in school again? More knowledge! What better way to use his brain than for this? With just a few more years of studying, he thinks he can gain more, and then later on start creating things to help later generations, because this is his personal philosophy: knowledge is the key to making lives better. After all, he's seen parts of the world that the world itself seems to ignore, and given that Garrett is a compassionate person, he'd want to fix that in his own way.
... Unfortunately that knowledge didn't teach him how to deal with people, especially those who are trying to eat the eye candy. What, you thought he'd have a lover or two over the years? Nope, sorry. Never had even one.
Proof: Video of a party celebrating his bachelor's degree-- himself, a few friends, food and drinks, probably a ridiculous King's Game as well...
Playing
First-person sample: Note: assuming he nabbed a voice recorder from somewhere for personal use.
First entry. Date-- date... I don't even know what date it is, if I can even follow the dating system in this place.
Third day of waking-- I suppose that's a good enough date as any.
[A sigh before he moves on.] Third day of waking.
A voice recording isn't exactly the first thing I'd use to keep track of events, but I have yet to find a proper paper notebook to use as a journal in this place.
This place... I honestly don't know what to think of it. The people here-- Workers, they call themselves-- say that I'm one of the Sleepers, those from the cryogenics area, and that everything that I've experienced before waking up in my own pod are all part of a dream. A dream. Mom, Dad, Light, Serah, Noel, Fang, Vanille... everyone, just figments of my imagination.
I cant believe it. [He has to swallow a little before moving on.]
And yet I have proof, right here in my hand. I've lost count of how many times I've watched this video. The person there, Garrett, looks just like me, acts like me and speaks like me, but there's... something else in his eyes. It's almost familiar, yet not, but I'm no expert on the minds of people.
The video is very convincing, and well-made, if it's a fake.
My time as a l'Cie, all those years of study, research and work-- were they all just in my mind? [Pausing, because he needs time to collect his thoughts. This is the problem with voiced notes-- he needs to think before he speaks, otherwise the whole thing will be unintelligible.] They say dreams are the products of ones' subconscious, so what does it say about me that I've built an entire world of fantasy monsters and magic alongside technology and humans?
... I need more time to think about this. [Click, off goes the gadget.]
Third-person sample:
His life seemed a little more lonely now. He remembered waiting and hoping for any news of Serah and Noel, whether it be from third parties or from the duo themselves. He remembered traveling across the land with his friends, his new family in tow, trying to survive and get stronger. He remembered becoming a leader to those far older than himself, and being respected because of his ability and intelligence.
How long would one have to live a lie before it became reality? Or in Hope's case, dream.
Anyone would say that if it felt real, then it was real. Oh yes, the dream indeed felt real. Having the brand seared onto his skin felt real at the time. So was turning into crystal. So were the sleepless nights. So were the scars he'd accumulated over the years, most as his time as a l'Cie, but some received when he was a little older and somewhat reckless with the machines.
There should have been one on his shoulder-- it was created by Odin's lightning magic when he tested Lightning, and it was always so vivid on his skin even fourteen years later. Then there were the burn marks he had been sporting on his hands for a few weeks before waking up because of tinkering around with the systems without gloves and he'd stubbornly refused any treatment or Cure magic to be used on him, saying that they would heal on their own. Yet his shoulder was smooth and unmarked, and he could move his fingers without feeling the pull of tender, healing skin.
Instead he had completely unfamiliar ones, such as a strange little scar on his abdomen that strangely resembled the result of ballistic trauma-- small caliber, he thought, smaller than the ones issued to PSICOM. He should know, because he was shot a few times while on the run as a l'Cie. Then Hope shuddered and put away that train of thought. He didn't like guns even though he knew how they worked.
The point was... The point was this: All the evidence pointed to the fact that this was real, with the exception of his memories. All his memories told him that the dream set in Cocoon and later Gran Pulse was the real thing, and this was all a gigantic hoax. The video left for him was in good quality and more than a little convincing, yes, but the scientist in him needed more proof than just a short clip of him with people he didn't recognize. And wasn't that strange in itself? He should have felt even a little bit of that recognition, of familiarity upon seeing those faces of so-called friends throwing him a party, and yet he didn't.
Hope sighed and turned away from the mirror. For now, he would play along and call himself Garrett Ross, but there was nothing that could make him forget or renounce that other life that he loved so much.
Did you read the rules? Yup.
Revision
Almost there!
Your application is good! We just have a few questions about your app before we can decide to accept or decline. Please expand on...
Powers
We would just like to clarify that there is no such force as "magic" accessible to characters within the game. If Hope retains his elemental spells, they would very likely translate into a type of elemental control. (Think benders in Avatar: The Last Airbender, if you know that reference.) This can either take the shape of naturally producing the elements necessary for whatever Hope would like to do, or he may find himself needing to find a source before manipulating a specific element. This is up to you.
Re: Revision
In the City, these spells will become the following abilities:
Fire/Fira/Firaga = pyrokinesis
Blizzard/Blizzara/Blizzaga = cryokinesis
Thunder/-ra/-ga = electro-
Water/-ra/-ga = hydro-
You'll notice that there are also tiers in FFXIII, but these will be gone. Just plain elemental manipulation without having to level up. He'll naturally produce fire and ice since it's a matter of atom vibration, but for electricity and water he needs an outside source.
... I've also removed Last Resort, since I've decided it makes Hope too haxx even when powered down, and Quake, the lone earth spell, because it's really negligible and makes the list too long.
