♢ POTENTIAL APP DISCUSSION

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS
How to

While the worldbuilding post is an excellent place to try and figure out City history CR, this page is more to help you to decide who you should apply for in the first place. Give us a good idea of what kind of character you're thinking of and let others comment in on how they might see it working!

Think of it as a thought experiment for yourself and other players. As a reminder, this is completely optional. You are totally free to reserve or apply someone without commenting to this post first.

♢ Reception to your idea will have no effect on how the mods process your app. This is only a tool to help you decide who to put the effort into.
♢ Don't spam or flame any potential character comments. While just going "OMG YES!!" can be encouraging, it doesn't really give anyone a whole lot to work with, and neither does shooting someone down. Be constructive.
♢ Give your honest opinion. If you think a character really wouldn't fit in the setting, express your concerns. Maybe the potential applicant didn't think of it from a certain point of view. Paired with the above, please don't just go "I don't think this will work". Provide some reasoning!
♢ Don't take anything personal. Anyone who comments back to you on this post is only trying to help — even if it isn't outright encouragement.

Your name: Samm

Hello, all! I am looking to pick a character. Just one. The thing is, I have a few small ideas and nothing where I am veering strongly, due to indecisiveness. The below are the notions that hold my interest the most and I am looking for feedback about who you think would work well here, who you would like to interact with, etc. I'm not prepared to make a decision today or whatever, we have some time.

This first concept is the one I am mooning to the most.

Character name: Ingrid Magnussen
Fandom: White Oleander
City life: A writer, perhaps a teacher (who might hate her job), librarian, etc.
Powers: I'm not sure yet! For her, I'd like something like turning things to ice, temperature manipulation, or something less ~obvious~ like being able to phase through objects and walls.
Do you think they'll be active? Probably not as much as most, but I frankly won't have time to be super duper involved, at least at first.
Do you think they'll participate in plot? She is more of a commentator and a solo wolf. She is more likely to do her own thing, socialise on her own terms, carve out her own life. She is fiercely independent in this way rather than being a team player of any kind.
Why this character interests you here: Recently, I felt inspired to go ahead and make a journal for her, so I'm toying with playing her somewhere.
Potential concerns: She is stone cold and doesn't make friends. This doesn't mean she isn't social, though. Also, she is a bit of an obscure character, so I don't know if anyone would care. For those that do know her, she'd probably be held to a high standard. Also, she comes from a world that is pure realism, and though I feel she has strong adaptive qualities, maybe she'd be side eyed for doing so by those who don't know her well.

Here are some back up notions:

Character name: Lucius Malfoy, possibly circa 1970s, so he would be in his 20s, rather than 40s. It would be my chosen canonpoint, rather than waking up younger with memories intact.
Fandom: Harry Potter
City life: Man, not sure. But he is sort of an up and coming lobbyist so he could go into more political and administrative roles. You know, low phyiscal effort.
Powers: As magic doesn't exist, I would take what skills seemed to fit him more, which was definitely leaning into the darker magics spectrum. My first thought would be some sort of mind-control persuasion (he had a knack for the Imperius Curse), or dramatic Death Eater style disapparition (within the confines of the setting, as stated re: teleportation powers). A take on the Cruciatus Curse might be interesting, like a biochemical pain response psychic power. OPTIONS.
Do you think they'll be active? He can be stand-offish, but there are ways to mitigate that. Especially with the revelation that his existence is a liiie.
Do you think they'll participate in plot? I love writing him in plotty capacity, so yes!
Why this character interests you here: He's one of my favourite characters to write anywhere, and I've been looking for a place to write the younger edition.
Potential concerns: I'm not sure how kosher it is to take a character from pre-canon! I feel like I can take implication from canon about what he may have been like, along with common sense, mostly because I've written him so much before. If it's not cool, though, that is fine in that I'd probably take someone else because I've written him exhaustively around onscreen canon times and it'd be the same deal even if I kept those memories and reverted his age.

Character name: Thor Odinson
Fandom: Marvel movie-verse, Thor.
City life: Enforcement, perhaps! Either for private type things (security guarding for business) or more public sector policing?
Powers: Probably super strength.
Do you think they'll be active? He is a pretty extroverted chap, so I would say this is likely.
Do you think they'll participate in plot? If you need a hero.
Why this character interests you here: As with Ingrid, I recently had a yen for this character and wound up slowly making a journal for him. I sort of like the notion that he is no longer, like, a god. For real this time.
Potential concerns: I've never written him before, perhaps there is objection to the movie-verse version of this character (I don't read comics because it's hard). He is also a Do-er, and I'm not sure how initiative-takey I will be at first, although this could probably be solved via his own displacement and a slower regaining of his powers.

Okay I am leaving it at these three lest I go crazy. For trivia purposes, my other options were Jack Sparrow and Gaius Baltar. And some other slightly lunatic ideas.

Oh, magnificent. :3 I've run into the pre-canon wall at least once so that's good to know, ty. (And yes I feel like Sparrow should happen eventually, even if it's not me.)

Thank ye for the feedbacks. :D

Your name: PUR
Character name: Trickster/Gabriel
Fandom: Supernatural

City life: I'm thinking he runs some kind of sweet-shop or cafe which caters to sweet-things--cakes and iced buns and pies and whatever. Because he has a sweet-tooth.

Powers: Because Gabriel's powers encompass just about EVERYTHING EVER, I'm thinking of a kind of 'trickster' theme to keep the powers that appear to include a kind of 'sleight of hand' sort of effect. So things he needs or can use to manipulate, prank or go prankster-vigilante on people, or ones he can use to make himself appear to be near-all-powerful or omniscient even though he isn't anymore.

Do you think they'll be active? Decently so! He'd take things at his own pace, though, and he could easily have periods of apparently doing nothing.

Do you think they'll participate in plot? Mmm depends. I'm not sure on my canon-point, which will make the biggest difference. Earlier canon, he won't be as involved in the plot, but he'd keep himself busy and watchful and interested in who's behind this 'trick'. Later canon, he would be more interested in the plot because he'd have more at stake, though still may not be as active as others.

Why this character interests you here: Because ~conspiracy~ and also the setting in which to explore/balance the diachrony of two very different lives. Gabriel isn't human originally; even while playing at being human he seems to keep himself somewhat aloof. Seeing how he handles a human backstory would be fun.

Potential concerns: Well, I've no idea what canon-point to bring him from, for one. Earlier canon would put him in denial and wanting to stay out of conflicts, and believing in 'destiny' and all that. Later canon would see him invested in the quest of averting the apocalypse and more overtly concerned with the people he considers important to him.

Also, Gabriel's someone who can maintain the status quo for a long, long time. It could be hard to arouse his interest beyond wanting to irritate or take vengeance on people. So I guess a consideration with his canon-point would be how able he might be to change or whether he'd potentially stagnate.

Your name: Ros
Character name: Arthur
Fandom: Inception - AU for past game memories
City life: Arthur's pretty flexible, useful for physical work (military, security, that kind of thing), managing/personal assisting, librarian stuff (his cover at the game he'll be coming from was "research librarian," so it's a role he has experience working in) annnd sketchy under-the-table criminal things.
Powers: Canonically, he has no powers. If I were to give him any, I'd like it to be something like dream walking... BUT PEOPLE DON'T DREAM HERE, so that's an issue. Unless his powers actively induced dreams.

Do you think they'll be active? Yes, I think he'll be pretty active, because the meta-plot will drive him to try to get to the bottom of things.
Do you think they'll participate in plot? Definitely!

Why this character interests you here: Given the nature of Arthur's canon, I think this premise will especially fuck with his head, and I'm a terrible person who enjoys that sort of thing. The struggle between what's a dream and what's reality, concerns that this might be Limbo, fighting off the urge to test his luck with a "kick", etc. Also, because I'd like to take him with memories from another game (Last Voyages), I'm interested in basically playing out his ongoing storyline with a game mate, should they app, too. Arthur has a responsibility towards another person in exchange for Cobb's safety (Arthur's pulled from towards the end of the film), and he'll try to keep to it even here.

Potential concerns: I'm always leery of apping a character with previous-game history, and I can easily play Arthur without it if it comes down to it. But! I'd prefer to keep the extra history. I'm basically just posting this to, I guess, give a heads up in case anyone has questions or concerns themselves?

Also, I'm trying to brainstorm what kind of city history he had, and I'm torn between "BORING MIDDLE CLASS HELL" (hence dreaming about such a fantastical life) and "sketchy criminal irl" (hence dreaming that he's some kind of amazing JAMES BOND of criminals).

Apologies for any incoherence. I've not had my coffee.

I really like the idea of using a "trickster" theme to his powers. It's a nice way to bunch them up and keep them relevant to each other.

Here's a thought: why would you want to bring him from an earlier canonpoint, where he would be less active and involved, rather than a later one? It seems the biggest difference between the two would be his activity levels, and perhaps some of his mindset on the setting? What do you think would make him the most flexible?

HI, THIS IS ONE OF THE MODS. MY NAME IS DJ. I'm just too lazy to log out of this journal right now. ♥

I don't think he could have the power to actively induce dreams, but perhaps a type of mind-reading/empathy that only works when the subject's guard is lowered (e.g. sleeping)? my co-mod can bust in like the Kool-Aid Man and correct me if I'm wrong, though

Your ideas for how he might react and be involved with the setting definitely intrigue me. That he might consider it Limbo is a cool possibility!

Yeah, he's got a number of abilities which don't have much to do with each other, but all of which could be used in a trickstering fashion, so it made the most sense. XD

Pur asplains herself do well, doesn't she? XD Bringing him in from an earlier canonpoint basically means I wouldn't have to micromanage him to the degree a character active in the metaplot might need. It also means he could get invested in different things; later canon means he's already invested in something, whereas in earlier canon he's just hiding and could be drawn out in different ways once in game. Flipside, later canon means his masks are already broken and he'd be potentially more open, even though he's interested in more specific things.

I think I might be leaning toward later canon, but not quite enough to say 'definitely' yet.

HI, I'M BEING LAZY WITH MY JOURNALS, TOO :V

I like the sound of that! Usually, I tend to err on the side of "no powers," so right now it's all just speculation. I'll spend more time between now and apps opening considering whether I want Arthur to find himself with abilities or not.

No powers is totally fair! Don't forget: you can decide to app him without powers and pitch something later if you change your mind, too.

Here, have some more.

Your name: Maggie
Character name: Shurelia (the girl in my icon, even!)
Fandom: Ar Tonelico

City life: See, there could be two possibilities here: She could be a school teacher of some sort, preferably for middle- or high-school ages? Or she could be law enforcement in some way/shape/form. /taps chin...

Powers: .... help? ): I know nobody knows canon except obsessive people like me so it might be hard, but... well, in canon, she has Song Magic. She sings, and then ~things happen~. A lot of her songs have robot-ish themes to them. Or bunnies. ... That probably makes no sense. I can maybe provide videos/screens by way of explanation? ;;

Do you think they'll be active? Yes. She's no busybody, but she's got a very kind-and-caring-mother-figure thing going on that she'd probably extend to like.... everyone ever. ♥

Do you think they'll participate in plot? More than likely.

Why this character interests you here: I've always wanted to play Shurelia. I just... feel like this will be a cool place to try it.

Potential concerns: Lone Canon Warrior. I know this will happen. It sucks, but hopefully I can move past it. :/ Also, I'm still wrapping my head around the concept of this game, period, so. Also also, no clue about canon point.

Re: powers, I was thinking about this, Maggie... what if she had a kind of conjuration? You would have to decide what sorts of things she could conjure, but it might be the closest equivalent to Song Magic.

Your name: Gray
Character name: Thresh
Fandom: The Hunger Games Books
City life: I can see him working/running a bakery, wheat and bread being pivotal to his District, and all.

Powers: One thing that's emphasized over and over in the books is how incredibly powerful he is, physically. Another is that, in the end, he's incredibly kind and gentle, to the point of not killing Katniss when he could have. Playing off of that, I'd like to see him have the ability to modulate his strength and muscle tone, going from able to throw a car, to being able to be gentle enough to make amazing detail work on his cakes and designs.

Do you think they'll be active? I think he might stick to himself at the start, but would open up and make a life in the City, as even though it is very strict, it's far less strict than his home district.

Do you think they'll participate in plot? Most likely, yes. He's used to things going haywire, so he would be very level headed in a crisis, and would be willing to head out and help rescue people.

Why this character interests you here: He's such and under developed character, I'd love to take the personality traits and history that we do know and grow and develop it in this new setting.

Potential concerns: He's a very minor character who dies in the first book, has slightly contradictory characterization in the movie verses the book, and this would be the first time I play him.

Something like that. I figure as one would go up, the other would go down, so he could be super strong, but not dexterous, or super dexterous, but not strong.

That's why I thought this game would be interesting to put him in, as the entire premise is that their original world is not to be talked of.

Your name: Flag yes weird i know

i'm actually undecided between two characters, both of which are super overpowered and of the angelic variety! you obviously need more of those right

Character name: Lucifel
Fandom: El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron
City life: This is the part I'm most stuck on with this character. Lucifel, who is just essentially Lucifer pre-fall, is basically a background character in the game he comes from. Sure, he's important because he's the one talking directly to God and all, but

that's all he does.

He saves your game, makes thinly-veiled jokes about your character, and just chats with God all day on a cellphone. I wouldn't be entirely sure what kind of job to give him.... Otherwise he would fit in fine, because he's very social and has a need to know things.

Powers: While he IS the highest angel, Lucifel is never shown in game whooping anybody's ass. In fact, when the protag is given the chance to learn a SUPER ULTRA ATTACK, Lucifel just kind of shoves the main guy off on his brother Uriel, who teaches him instead. It's implied he's pretty formidable, but seems to be kind of lazy in that regard.

Otherwise, his powers include freely moving through the timestream, stopping (rewinding and fastforwarding) time with the snap of his fingers, and generally not giving a shit about dividing by zero.

Do you think they'll be active? Lucifel is very sociable, he likes to listen, to know things, and generally be annoying. He usually makes subtle jabs at people, even his friends and friends. He loves to interact with the world around him, so I think he'd be pretty active.

Do you think they'll participate in plot? Probably. While Lucifel does like to move things along, he usually leaves it up to others or helps others out, instead of him pushing anything himself.

Why this character interests you here: Because it's always interesting to play a non-human character as human, and I think Lucifel would eventually just start looking at it as a mini-vacation, thinking he can just zap himself to whatever timeline he needs to be in later.

Potential concerns: Besides not knowing what kind of job to give him initially, there's also all these whacky worldbreaking powers to consider. And yeah, I can dumb them way down, but it's also kind of fun to have time be your playground. I just wouldn't want to make him annoyingly powerful, so others inputs on what to do with him would help.

AND THE SECOND ONE i know tl;dr

Character name: Balthazar
Fandom: Supernatural
City life: Balthazar's thing is pretty much hedonism, so anything to do with sex, alcohol, and drugs. party hard party hard

Powers: Since Balthazar's not an archangel, he's not as powerful as Gabriel up there, but he's still got all the world-breaking powers of angels in the Supernatural verse. also i think he likes time-traveling way more than he should

Do you think they'll be active? He'll be active, he'll just be a complete snot about it. Balthazar knows how to talk to people, he's good at it, too, but he's much better at being an absolute asshole. And drinking. Balthazar likes to use people, though, so I think he'd be active enough to get buddy-buddy with people that are useful, and then move on to rubs elbows with more useful people. He's not very nice.

Do you think they'll participate in plot? If it involves him potentially getting killed or destroying whatever plans he has for himself, yes. Otherwise, he'd rather stay out of your stupid squabbles thank you very much.

Why this character interests you here: Because torturing Balthazar and making him live a human life amongst humans without most of his powers is hilarious and I enjoy that. also playing with other supernatural people is always cool

Potential concerns: first time really playing him in a game, and being overpowered
